Ultrasonic testing (UT)

If the inner surface of a component is not accessible, ultrasonic testing is usually used to find defects. For example, aircraft structures can be inspected reliably or wall thickness measurements can be carried out on ships.

Ultrasonic testing offers a meaningful test result for many demanding products, for example in the railroad or bridge sector, and can be used universally as a "non-radiating" method.

An ultrasonic source, a transducer or probe, generates sound pulses that are directed into the workpiece with the aid of a coupling fluid. This ultrasonic pulse is reflected either at a boundary surface (flaw) or at a back wall. The probe receives the sonic signal and displays it on the screen of an ultrasonic device. Defects cause a deviating sound signal and are also clearly identified in their depth position.

We have a long tradition with ultrasonic applications and inspect a wide variety of trades on a daily basis, both in the aerospace sector and in industry. We use ultrasound to measure the wall thickness of ships, inspect wind turbines and wheelset shafts as well as bridges and industrial structures. Our inspectors, qualified according to DIN EN 4179 or DIN EN ISO 9712, are ready for any new task.
