Non-destructive material testing (NDT)

If components or structures are inspected for defects or inhomogeneities without rendering them unusable for further use, non-destructive materials testing by the specialized Zeppelin team is always an excellent choice.

For decades, Zeppelin has been at home in all relevant methods of non-destructive testing (NDT).

As a DIN EN ISO 17025 accredited DAkkS testing laboratory as well as a DIN EN 9100 certified or Nadcap NDT accredited testing company, Zeppelin has DIN EN ISO 9712 and/or EN 4179 /NAS-410 certified or qualified testing personnel. It is irrelevant whether you approach us with your requirements from industry, aerospace or any other sector: we carry out the testing for you in accordance with the standards or according to your specifications.

Dye penetrant testing (PT)

Dye penetrant testing can be used as a so-called red-white test on all non-absorbent materials that have a defect open to the surface. As an easy-to-apply method, it is primarily used for mobile applications.

Penetrant testing (PT) - fluorescent

By viewing under UV light, fluorescent penetrant testing achieves significantly higher sensitivity levels than conventional dye penetrant testing. The method is used in particular for aerospace components.

Magnetic particle inspection (MT)

Cracks or near-surface flaws located on ferromagnetic components can be detected with magnetic particle inspection. Depending on the size of the component to be inspected, a mobile magnetic yoke or solenoid coil is used.

If ferromagnetic components can be magnetized in a DC or AC test bench and evaluated under UV light, maximum display sensitivity is guaranteed. Even the smallest cracks and imperfections are reliably detected.

X-ray testing (RT) film

X-ray testing is one of the oldest test methods for reliably detecting detect deeper volume defects with certainty. Depending on the nature of the of the component, the radiographic medium varies. Traditionally, the evaluation is carried out via X-ray film.

Even though the technical procedure for X-ray remains the same, digital storage media such as imaging plates have become increasingly popular in recent years. In addition to the recyclability of the films, the rapid availability of the images is a plus.

Ultrasonic testing (UT)

If the inner surface of a component is not accessible, ultrasonic testing is usually used to find defects. For example, aircraft structures can be inspected reliably or wall thickness measurements can be carried out on ships.

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT)

Phased array ultrasonic testing uses phased array technology to visualize complex volume defects in a wide variety of materials. As a mature volume inspection method, PAUT is often a substitute for "radiant" X-ray inspection.

Eddy current testing is the method of choice for conductive materials, especially when it comes to detecting surface cracks or near-surface defects located under multiple layers or under a non-conductive coating.

In order to detect the smallest leaks in vessels, tanks, heat exchangers or other plant components, helium is the preferred test gas for industrial leak detection.

Endoscopy

Rigid or flexible endoscopes can be used for visual inspections in cavities and vessels that are difficult to see. The same applies to internal inspection of pipes and piping systems and other complex component geometries.

X-ray fluorescence material analysis

X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), also called X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (RFS), is one of the most commonly used methods for material determination. The advantage of XRF over spectral analysis is that the material is not damaged.
